This glossary can help you prepare for the IELTS writing tasks related to Influence on children’s development.

achieve: verb; Successfully bring about or reach (a desired objective or result) by effort, skill, or courage.; Example: However, learning to understand and share the value system of the whole society cannot be achieved just in the home.
affect: verb; Have an effect on; make a difference to.; Example: Others think otherwise, insisting that a child’s growth is most affected by other things such as schools and their friends.
behave: verb; Act or conduct oneself in a specified way, especially towards others.; Example: A good parent can help children to know what is important in life, what role they will play in their world, and how they are expected to behave.
community: noun; A group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common.; Example: Once a child goes to school, he or she is entering a wider community where teachers and peers will exert an influence on them.
contribute: verb; Give (something, especially money) in order to help achieve or provide something.; Example: This experience teaches them how to cooperate with each other and how to contribute to the life of their community.
exert: verb; Apply or bring to bear (a force, influence, or quality).; Example: Once a child goes to school, he or she is entering a wider community where teachers and peers will exert an influence on them.
influence: noun; The capacity to have an effect on the character, development, or behaviour of someone or something, or the effect itself.; Example: It is quite common for people to believe that the majority of influence on children is made by their parents.
irreplaceable: adjective; Impossible to replace if lost or damaged.; Example: I think parents have an irreplaceable influence on their children, but that this is not the main factor for them.
peer: noun; Someone who graduated in the same year as a fellow student.; Example: Once a child goes to school, he or she is entering a wider community where teachers and peers will exert an influence on them.
variety: noun; The quality or state of being different or diverse; the absence of uniformity or monotony.; Example: At school, children will experience working and living with people from a whole variety of backgrounds from the wider society.
